UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Libya wants to see members of the former regime of Moammar Gadhafi returned from countries where they found shelter after the war, the prime minister said.
Gadhafi died after falling into rebel hands in the waning stages of Libya's civil war. The colonel and several members of his regime were suspected of committing war crimes during the 2011 conflict.
Several members of the Gadhafi family, including his daughter Aisha, are the subject of international arrest warrants.
Libyan Prime Minister Ali Zeidan told delegates at the 68th session of the U.N. General Assembly the government was hoping for the return of former regime members.
"We look forward to the cooperation of the countries concerned, especially the neighboring countries, to surrender the wanted elements of the former regime who found shelter in these countries, and engaged in criminal activities which threaten the security and stability of Libya," he said Wednesday.
Saif al-Islam, Gadhafi's son, is on trial in Tripoli for war crimes allegedly committed during the civil war. He's wanted by the International Criminal Court, though Libya said it has the right to try former regime official so long as the national courts are open and functioning.
Tarek Mitri, U.N. special envoy for Libya, reported to the Security Council last week the security situation in Libya presents "a formidable challenge" to judicial authorities.
