Muslim Brotherhood vows no end to Egypt protests

CAIRO, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- The Muslim Brotherhood vowed Friday to continue demonstrations through the weekend in support of deposed Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi.

The Muslim Brotherhood published a statement Friday thanking supporters for turning out in the "millions" to demonstrate Thursday, the first full day of celebrations marking the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

"We call upon the masses of the great Egyptian people to continue to take their families to liberty squares to celebrate 'Victory Day' together on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, so the world should witness the civilized nature of Egyptians defending democracy and electoral legitimacy," the message said.

Morsi hails from the Freedom and Justice Party, the Brotherhood's political arm. The movement says it is frustrated with the international community's reluctance to call the July 3 ouster of Morsi a military coup.

Protests in Egypt turned deadly last month but there have been few reports of violence during ongoing demonstrations. Brotherhood supporters say they want Morsi reinstated, but have so far brushed off political outreach efforts from interim leaders.

The U.S. Embassy in Cairo said Wednesday it was concerned about the potential for violence. The embassy is closed because of a global alert issued last week by the U.S. State Department.

Egyptian newspaper al-Ahram reported Friday staff members from the U.S. Embassy in Cairo were evacuated because of the threat.
