Pyongyang mum on Kaesong talks

SEOUL, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- The South Korean government said Thursday it's received no word from Pyongyang on a proposal for talks about opening the Kaesong joint industrial complex.

Tensions on the Korean Peninsula remain high in the wake of the February test by North Korea of a nuclear device. The sides have been at odds over the resumption of work at the Kaesong joint industrial complex, the only economic link between the two countries.

The 10-year-old facility was shuttered in April because of tensions between the two Koreas. Six rounds of talks at the working group level ended in July with no breakthrough.

Seoul extended a hand this week, though the Yonhap news agency reports Thursday the government in North Korea has remained silent.

A high-ranking official in the South Korean government told Yonhap on condition of anonymity there was no deadline for North Korea to respond.

"The government's stance securing safeguards for the complex remains unchanged and firm," the official said.

The South Korean government has said it expects more sincerity from North Korea regarding the potential for multilateral negotiations over the industrial complex and the nuclear issue.
