UNITED NATIONS, July 10 (UPI) -- Lebanon must ensure the country remains secure and shielded from ongoing crises in neighboring Syria, the U.N. Security Council said.
Dozens of people were injured in a Tuesday car bombing in a Beirut district controlled by Hezbollah. The Daily Star newspaper in Lebanon reported it was the first incident of its kind in the Bir al-Abed district since 1985.
The U.N. Security Council passed a resolution late Tuesday condemning what it said was a terrorist attack in Beirut.
The opposition March 14 political alliance in Lebanon said Hezbollah's involvement in the Syrian civil war was to blame for the car bombing Tuesday, the official National News Agency reports.
Hezbollah fighters have deployed alongside forces loyal to its longtime ally, Syrian President Bashar Assad. Hussein Musawi, a Hezbollah member of the Lebanese Parliament, said Wednesday it was frustration with a divided political system that led to the violence, The Daily Star reports.
Hezbollah is a member of the ruling March 8 alliance. Najib Mikati, a Hezbollah ally, resigned as prime minister in April because of internal political disputes.
The Security Council called on all parties in Lebanon to work together to ensure national security. It "stressed the importance for all Lebanese parties to respect Lebanon's policy of disassociation and to refrain from any involvement in the Syrian crisis."
