China touts soldier's resolve

BEIJING, July 8 (UPI) -- The changing nature of warfare should not diminish the fighting spirit among Chinese soldiers, the Chinese military said Monday.

The People's Liberation Army Daily, the newspaper of the Chinese military, said Monday the warrior spirit of Chinese soldiers should prevail as defense systems become more technologically advanced.

"Some believe that in the age of information war, the mighty aircraft and missiles will crush even the most extraordinary fighting spirit," China's official Xinhua News Agency quoted the commentary as saying. "The PLA has always aligned gallantry with tactics, courage with confidence, and readiness with prudence."

The U.S. and Chinese governments have traded accusations over cyberwarfare. Each side accuses the other of targeting sensitive computer networks.

Chinese Ambassador to Washington Cui Tiankai said Sunday an upcoming bilateral security dialogue would be an opportunity to review military and strategic concerns.

"This dialogue is not only held at an important time, but also has far-reaching implications on the bilateral relations," he said.

The U.S. Defense Department is focusing more on the Asia-Pacific region as military obligations in the Middle East wind down. The Chinese military said it has an open relationship with its U.S. counterparts.
