VIENNA, June 3 (UPI) -- "Going around in circles" isn't the right way to address international concerns related to Iran's nuclear program, the IAEA director general said from Vienna.
International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Yukiya Amano briefed the board of governors Monday in Vienna. He said he wasn't able to conclude that all of the nuclear material in Iran was designated for peaceful purposes.
Iran is suspected of pursuing the technology needed to manufacture a nuclear weapon. The Iranian government denies the allegations, adding it has the right to a peaceful nuclear program as a signatory to the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty.
Amano said Iran's enrichment of uranium has increased in violation of resolutions passed by the IAEA and U.N. Security Council. There's been little progress made in allaying international concerns despite a series of multilateral talks held this year.
"To be frank, for some time now we have been going around in circles," he said in his statement. "This is not the right way to address issues of such great importance to the international community, including Iran."
Nuclear inspectors have been unable to access the Parchin military complex near Tehran during their probes. Amano said Iran is called on to address the need for an effective verification program.
"Unless Iran does so, it will not be possible for the agency to resolve outstanding issues, including those relating to possible military dimensions to Iran's nuclear program," he said.
