Concerns grow ahead of Somali conference

MOGADISHU, Somalia, May 6 (UPI) -- Terrorist attacks in Mogadishu won't undermine Somalia's political progress or diminish international support for reforms, a U.N. political officer said.

The United Nations said at least seven people died in an attack last week on a convoy carrying international representatives in Mogadishu.

U.N. special envoy for Somalia Augustine Mahiga said the attacks shouldn't overshadow Somalia's recent political gains.

"These cowardly and senseless acts of violence will not undermine the remarkable progress Somalia has made in the past months," he said in a statement. "The United Nations will continue to support the government's efforts to improve security in the country and will not be deterred in supporting the peace building effort in Somalia."

Human Rights Watch called on international donors, set to discuss Somalia during a London conference Tuesday, to press for wide-reaching reforms.

"If world leaders meeting in London seek meaningful change for Somalia's future they will support measures to help all Somali victims of abuse, past and present, have a path to justice," British Director for Human Rights Watch David Mepham said.

Somali last year formed a functioning central government for the first time since the 1990s.
