ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- An Ivorian official said the situation was under control Monday following a deadly attack on a military base in the Ivory Coast commercial capital Abidjan.
Violence was reported early Monday near a military base in Abidjan. Gunfire escalated throughout the day, though Guillaume Soro, head of the national assembly, was quoted by the BBC as saying "the situation is under control."
At least six Ivorian soldiers were killed in the attack, which followed similar violence in the east of the country last weekend.
The United Nations in July said it was investigating an attack a camp for the internally displaced. At least seven people were killed and 5,000 refugees fled after the camp was burned. Rupert Colville, a spokesman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights, said the attack was "clearly ethnically motivated."
Ivory Coast was pushed to the brink of civil war after disputed presidential election in 2010. Recent outbreaks of violence have led to concerns about the durability of the fragile peace that followed former Ivorian President Laurent Gbagbo's arrest in April 2011.
Gbagbo's war crimes trial at the International Criminal Court was delayed while counsel examines his health record.
