Afghan security forces kill 24 militants

KABUL, Afghanistan, May 29 (UPI) -- Afghanistan's Ministry of the Interior is reporting success in its campaign against insurgents.

The ministry said recent operations have resulted in the deaths of 21 militants with 19 others wounded across the country.

Fighting against insurgents was carried out by Afghan internal security and military forces in conjunction with International Security Assistance Force troops in Kabul, Kunar, Nangarhar, Kunduz, Faryab, Kandahar, Helmand, Uruzgan, Maidan Wardak and Logar provinces.

A statement issued by the Afghan Ministry of the Interior said search operations accompanying the military operations uncovered a substantial quantity of weapons and explosives, including 22 rocket launchers, AK-47 assault rifles, ammunition, roadside bombs, mobile communications equipment and more than 70 pounds of drugs, the Pakistan Observer reported Tuesday.

The Taliban told media outlets that it conducted a series of anti-government operations in 22 provinces. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said Taliban operations targeted Afghan and foreign soldiers, killing and injuring a number of their opposition.
