CAIRO, April 27 (UPI) -- Islamist groups in Egypt organized protests in Cairo's central square, saying they wanted to preserve the spirit of the 2011 revolution.
Demonstrators flocked to Tahrir Square to protest the military's control over the post-revolutionary government. Protesters chanted "No elections under military rule," during events organized by Islamist groups like the Muslim Brotherhood, Egyptian news service al-Ahram reports.
The Muslim Brotherhood this week said it would stage demonstrations every Friday until military authorities hand power over to civilian leaders.
The military took control of the government after last year's revolution forced longtime President Hosni Mubarak from power.
An election commission approved 13 candidates to run in the presidential contest. Voters cast ballots in late May and campaigning begins officially this weekend.
Mohamed Morsi, chairman of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, is among the candidates. He's considered to be among the leaders, alongside former Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa.
Large rallies were reported in Tahrir Square last week, though the Egyptian news service reports a lower turnout Friday, noting traffic was moving freely in the area.
