U.S. has broad strategy for LRA's Kony

WASHINGTON, March 9 (UPI) -- The U.S. government has a "comprehensive, multifaceted strategy" for dealing with the Lord's Resistance Army, a White House official said.

A 30-minute video posted on YouTube from the advocacy group Invisible Children has gained international attention since it was initially posted early this week. Dubbed Kony 2012, it aims to generate attention to atrocities allegedly committed by Joseph Kony, the leader of Ugandan rebel group LRA.

U.S. President Barack Obama in October ordered 100 Special Forces soldiers to Uganda to help track down Kony and LRA militia leaders.

Jay Carney, a spokeswoman for the Obama administration, said the U.S. government was working to address a "unique crisis of conscience."

"The United States continues to pursue a comprehensive, multifaceted strategy to help the governments and people of central Africa in their efforts to end the threat posed by the LRA and reduce the human consequences of the LRA's atrocities," he said during a regular press briefing.

Kony remains at large despite a 2005 indictment by the International Criminal Court on more than 30 counts of violations of international law, including war crimes.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. State Department noted the U.S. government wasn't involved in direct conflict tied to the LRA but in "supporting and providing advice to the forces of the governments of East and Central Africa that are engaged in the fight."
