CAIRO, March 9 (UPI) -- The official registration period for candidates vying for the Egyptian president runs from Saturday through April 8, an election committee said.
The first post-revolution presidential election in Egypt is scheduled for May 23-24. The Egyptian Higher Presidential Elections Committee said candidates can register for the contest starting Saturday, Egyptian news service al-Ahram reports.
Candidates are limited to spending $1.6 million on campaigns. Foreign donations are prohibited. Campaigning would stop for two days prior to the election.
The news service identifies former Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa and former Muslim Brotherhood member Abdel Moneim Aboul Fotough as among the most well-received potential candidates.
The Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party controls both houses of the Egyptian Parliament. The Muslim Brotherhood said wouldn't field a presidential candidate, however, and FJP said it would withhold its endorsement until after the April 8 deadline for registration.
Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was ousted after nearly 30 years in power during the country's revolution last year. He and members of his inner circle face murder and corruption charges in the Egyptian courts.
