Iran deflects blame for latest attacks

TEHRAN, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- An Iranian official says Israel is claiming Iran was involved in attacks on its diplomats overseas to gain support from the international community.

Israeli officials blamed Iran and Lebanon's Shiite resistance movement Hezbollah for Monday attacks on embassy vehicles in New Delhi and Tbilisi. The Georgia attack was thwarted but the New Delhi attack left at least four people injured, including the wife an Israeli defense diplomat.

Ismail Kowsari, deputy chairman of an Iranian parliamentary committee on national security, said Israel was blaming Iran to generate geopolitical capital.

"Israel, which has been behind the assassination of our nation's scientists, has pointed the finger of blame towards Iran to vindicate itself and to deflect international public opinion," he was quoted by Iran's state-funded broadcaster Press TV as saying.

Some of Iran's nuclear scientists have been killed inside the country as Western concerns over Iran's nuclear ambitions escalate.

New Delhi said it wasn't assigning blame but noted it considered the attack an act of terrorism, al-Jazeera reports.

The U.S. State Department condemned the attacks, describing the "scourge of terrorism" as an assault to the entire international community.
