MEXICO CITY, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- One of Moammar Gadhafi's sons, last known to be in Niger, tried to enter Mexico secretly using fake documents, Mexico's interior ministry said.

Mexican Interior Minister Alejandro Poire said authorities captured Canadian, Danish and Mexican citizens trying to sneak Saadi Gadhafi into the country illegally.

"Preventing the entry of al-Saadi Gadhafi constitutes, without a doubt, another sign that Mexican institutions are strong," Poire was quoted by Bloomberg News as saying.

Interpol issued a Red Notice for Saadi Gadhafi because of "armed intimidation" when he served as the head of the Libyan Football Federation. His lawyer denied the charges.

Libya's transitional government expressed outrage in November with Niger President Mahamadou Issoufou said his government would grant asylum to Saadi Gadhafi as a refugee for humanitarian reasons.

Saif al-Islam Gadhafi, one of Moammar Gadhafi's surviving sons, and Libyan intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi were captured last month. Both are subject to arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court.

Former Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi died in October after falling into rebel custody near his hometown of Sirte. Human rights groups suspect he was summarily executed.
