KUWAIT CITY, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- With pressure growing in the government in Kuwait, the government described Wednesday's parliamentary disturbances as irresponsible.
Anti-government protesters managed to storm the Kuwaiti Parliament during debates over whether to question the country's prime minister on corruption charges.
Opposition lawmakers accuse Prime Minister Nasser al-Mohammad al-Sabah of transferring money to accounts outside the country illegally, al-Jazeera reports.
Government spokesman Ali Fahad al-Rashid was quoted by the official Kuwaiti News Agency, known as KUNA, as saying Emir Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah was outraged over the situation.
"His highness the emir emphasized that adopting such disorderly behavior that ended in storming into the parliament building and violating its sanctity is irresponsible," the spokesman said. "The actions witnessed yesterday are unfamiliar to the Kuwaiti society and threaten the security and stability of the country's general system."
Kuwait's foreign minister resigned last month over corruption allegations. Police used batons to beat back protesters who were storming the home of the country's prime minister early this week, al-Jazeera adds.
The broadcaster notes that roughly 16 members of the Kuwaiti Parliament are accused of receiving millions of dollars in bribes.
