Threat to British Embassy in Kuwait

LONDON, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office announced it suspended embassy services in Kuwait because of a threat against its embassy there.

"Whilst the threat is targeted against the embassy itself, we cannot rule out threats against other British interests in Kuwait," the commonwealth office said in a statement. "We therefore advise that British organizations and businesses in Kuwait review the security procedures they have in place."

The embassy said services were suspended until the weekend.

The FCO noted that overall threat level for Kuwait was the same and there were no travel restrictions in place.

A spokesman for the embassy told the BBC that non-essential staff members were told to go home.

A statement issued by the embassy warned of "a general threat from terrorism," adding there were threats issued against the gulf region in general. The targets include military and oil installations.

The FCO noted that while demonstrations in Kuwait City and other major metropolitan areas in early 2011 were peaceful, British nationals are advised to avoid public gatherings and demonstrations.

The British broadcaster notes Prince Charles is expected in Kuwait soon to mark the 50th anniversary of the country's independence from Great Britain.
