BRUSSELS, July 7 (UPI) -- The U.N. Security Council is called on to condemn the brutality of the Syrian regime of President Bashar Assad, the European Parliament said Thursday.

Amnesty International in a report this week said it found evidence of crimes against humanity committed against the Syrian population. Amnesty International Deputy Director for Middle East and North African Affairs Philip Luther said the U.N. Security Council needs to refer Damascus to the International Criminal Court before legal action can take place.

Members of the European Parliament said Thursday the Security Council needs to pass a resolution condemning Syria.

Turkish and Lebanese authorities are urged to set up humanitarian corridors to help Syrians fleeing the country.

Damascus was urged to let the international media examine claims that extremists are firing on state security forces, "which is the regime's justification for the unacceptable bloodbath that is taking place."

British officials have said Assad must enact reforms in his country or step aside. Washington said promises of reform from Damascus aren't credible given the level of violence in the country.

The Security Council has been unable to reach a consensus on Syria.

At least 20 people were killed in Syrian violence this week.
