CAIRO, June 28 (UPI) -- There are no plans to postpone parliamentary elections in Egypt from September to December, a member of the ruling military council said.

Deputy Prime Minister Yehia al-Gamal during the weekend suggested parliamentary elections in the country would be delayed.

A source in the ruling military council said on condition of anonymity there were no plans to alter the election calendar, Egyptian news agency Al-Masry Al-Youm reports.

The ruling military council in Egypt called for parliamentary elections in September. Work would then begin on drafting a new constitution.

Critics complain drafting the constitution after the elections would give established Islamist parties such as the Muslim Brotherhood the upper hand in formulating new laws.

Banned under the regime of Hosni Mubarak, the Brotherhood is organizing its political activity under the newly sanctioned Freedom and Justice Party.

Egyptians head to the polls in November to pick their next president, nine months after widespread demonstrations forced Mubarak to step down after three decades in office.
