London hails Hutu leader transfer to court

LONDON, June 16 (UPI) -- There can be no escape from international justice, a British official said following news a Rwandan war crime suspect was transferred to an international court.

Former Hutu militia leader Bernard Munyagishari was transferred from the Democratic Republic of Congo to the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda in Arusha, Tanzania.

Munyagishari is accused of co-founding and training the Interahamwe militia, distributing weapons and overseeing fighters as they operated roadblocks and killed Tutsis.

He was arrested in the DRC in May.

British Foreign Minister for Africa Henry Bellingham said he was encouraged by Munyagishari's transfer from DRC to the international tribunal in Tanzania

"Munyagishari's arrest demonstrates that there can be no escape from the reach of international justice," he said in a statement.

Munyagishari was targeted by the U.S. State Department's Rewards for Justice program with up to $5 million offered for his capture.

Hutu leader Augustin Bizimungu was convicted in May by the Rwandan tribunal and sentenced to 30 years in jail for genocide and crimes against humanity.

The Hutu leader was found to have trained troops and militiamen to kill members of the rival Tutsi clan. He was arrested in 2002 in Angola.
