London hails Pakistan's regional role

LONDON, June 8 (UPI) -- Pakistan is playing a constructive role in the reintegration and reconciliation process under way in Afghanistan, a British envoy said Wednesday.

British Ambassador to Afghanistan William Patey returned to London following a two-day visit with Pakistani officials.

Patey said durable contacts with Pakistani and Afghan officials promoted efforts to find a political solution to the Afghan situation.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai is encouraging a reintegration and reconciliation measure with some members of insurgent groups like the Taliban.

Patey said Islamabad was playing a constructive role in the reconciliation process.

"There are opportunities for the Taliban to join the peace process and disassociate themselves from al-Qaida and I hope that Pakistan can continue to play a positive role in the Afghan-led peace process," he said in a statement.

U.S. lawmakers are questioning the commitment to Afghanistan after al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. forces in a May 2 raid in Pakistan.

Patey added that London's commitment to Afghanistan extends beyond any military timeline.

Karzai said he'd like his forces to assume responsibility over security responsibilities as international forces consider drawing down their mission in Afghanistan.
