Lebanese worried about national security

BEIRUT, Lebanon, June 1 (UPI) -- Security in Lebanon is under scrutiny after forces with the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon were attacked in the south of the country, citizens said.

Six Italian soldiers operating with UNIFIL were injured in a bomb attack near Sidon in southern Lebanon.

Italy's defense ministry said the bomb was intended to strike a convoy of four trucks belonging to the Italian contingent attached to UNIFIL.

The explosion occurred on the International Day of U.N. Peacekeepers, an event celebrating peacekeepers killed in missions.

Residents told the Daily Star newspaper in Lebanon the attack reflects heightened concerns over the security situation in the country.

"I am sure that we will have more problems like this if we don't have a government very soon," said a valet from Beirut. "Without a government there is no security and there are no safe places for anyone."

Lebanon has been without a unity government since Hezbollah led an opposition walkout in January that collapsed the government of Prime Minister Saad Hariri. Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati has been unable to form a new coalition since then.

Others told the Lebanese newspaper that unrest in neighboring Syria was created unease at home.
