India, Pakistan continue Siachen talks

NEW DELHI, May 31 (UPI) -- Indian and Pakistani defense delegations conducted a 12th round of talks on military deployments around the contested Siachen glacier.

The bilateral talks have stalled since 2008, The Telegraph newspaper in Kolkata, India, reported Tuesday.

Indian Defense Secretary Pradeep Kumar met with his Pakistani counterpart, Lt. Gen. Syed Ather Ali but discussions stalled where they were at the end of the last round of talks.

The Indian delegation included the Director-General of Military Operations, Lt. Gen. A.M. Verma, surveyor-general S. Subha Rao and the special secretary in the Defense Ministry, R.K. Mathur.

The Pakistani delegation included Maj. Gen. Ashfaq Nadeem Ahmed, Maj. Gen. Munwar Ahmed Solehri and retired Maj. Gen. Mir Haider Ali Khan.

The Indian government side wants Pakistan to "authenticate" the 66-mile Actual Ground Position Line, along which its troops are deployed, while Pakistan wants India to withdraw and redeploy troops from the Saltoro Range, to the north and west of the siachen glacier, primarily held by India.

Although the dispute is labeled the "Siachen Glacier dispute," Pakistani troops aren't in fact deployed on the glacier that flows through Indian territory in Ladakh.
