Bahrain accuses Hezbollah of meddling

MANAMA, Bahrain, April 25 (UPI) -- The government in Bahrain claims in a report to the United Nations that Shiite group Hezbollah is plotting against the Sunni monarchy.

Bahrain is facing international scrutiny over its response to a Shiite uprising against the country's ruling Sunni minority.

The group Physicians for Human Rights said last week it had forensic evidence that Bahraini security forces attacked medical staff and patients with birdshot, rubber bullets and "unidentified chemical agents."

The government in Manama in a report to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Hezbollah was training opposition groups in Lebanon and Iran to undermine the ruling monarchy.

"Evidence confirms that Bahraini elements are being trained in Hezbollah camps specifically established to train assets from the gulf," CNN quoted the report as stating.

The report claims Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah was working with Shiite groups in Bahrain like the opposition al-Wefaq and al-Haq groups.

Several opposition leaders in Bahrain are under arrest, CNN reports. Wefaq is banned but took 18 seats in the 40-member Parliament in 2009 elections.

Iran and Hezbollah deny the allegations, though Tehran is a frequent critic of the Sunni minority in Bahrain. The U.S. State Department said Iran was meddling in Bahrain's affairs, though officials said Tehran's influence was minimal.
