LONDON, April 12 (UPI) -- Libyan defector and former Foreign Minister Musa Kusa can leave Britain for an international conference in Qatar, sources revealed Tuesday.
Kusa can leave Britain for an international conference on Libya scheduled Wednesday in Qatar, The Guardian newspaper in London reports. The defector will join world leaders alongside members of the rebel-backed opposition in Benghazi to discuss a post-Gadhafi Libya.
Western and Arab militaries are enforcing a U.N.-mandated no-fly zone over Libya in order to protect the civilian population from attacks by forces loyal to Libyan leader Moammar Gahdafi.
The London newspaper adds that Kusa allegedly has ties to the rebels in Benghazi, notably opposition Mahmoud Jibril. During a March meeting with British Prime Minister David Cameron, Jibril said a post-Gadhafi government would be open to every adult Libyan citizen.
Kusa is believed to be examining a possible role in whatever post-Gadhafi government emerges from the Libyan conflict.
The former foreign minister told the BBC on Monday that it was in the interest of the international community to "avoid taking Libya into civil war."
He was debriefed by British intelligence recently for information about the 1998 bombing of PanAm flight 103, which was carried out by a former Libyan intelligence officer.
The Guardian adds he isn't a suspect, though British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Kusa wasn't shielded from potential prosecution in the case.
