CAIRO, April 8 (UPI) -- Protesters flocked to Cairo's central Tahrir Square to demand prosecution for former President Hosni Mubarak, witnesses said Friday.

Throngs of protesters occupied the central square earlier this year calling for democratic reforms. Mubarak eventually bowed to the pressure, resigning Feb. 11 after three decades in power.

Several officials from the Mubarak era are on trial in Egypt following the February revolution. The country's interior ministry is facing charges he ordered snipers to fire on unarmed demonstrators at the height of the unrest.

Protesters Friday called on authorities to prosecute Mubarak in what was estimated to be the largest gathering since the president resigned, Egyptian newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm reports.

Several Mubarak-era officials are still in power, including Cairo's Gov. Abdel Azim Wazir. Demonstrators said they wanted the public prosecutor replaced because the military leadership in power is slow to bring former regime officials to justice, the report added.

A misdemeanor court this week found that medical reports tied to a case against the Interior Ministry indicate prisoners were beaten and tortured with electric tools while in custody during unrest early this year.

At least 300 people were killed during the Egyptian revolution.
