UNITED NATIONS, March 23 (UPI) -- The United States looks to Tehran to show the international community it's committed to addressing concerns about its nuclear program, a diplomat said.
Nestor Osorio, the Colombian envoy to the United Nations, said in a statement regarding a review of Iranian sanctions that there was "serious concern" following reports of alleged violations of an arms embargo.
The Security Council heard reports of the seizure of 13 shipping containers from Iran and a separate container bound from Iran to Syria containing explosive materials.
Iran is sanctioned under a variety of U.N. Security Council resolutions for not meeting international commitments to nuclear program transparency.
Yukiya Amano, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, said in a March 7 report that, while Iran wasn't diverting any of its declared nuclear material to outside facilities, it wasn't providing "credible assurance" regarding the intent of its nuclear program.
Rosemary DiCarlo, the U.S. deputy envoy to the United Nations, said in prepared remarks to the Security Council that Iran is called on to come clean on its nuclear program.
"Our goal remains to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons," she said. "We remain committed to working closely with our partners in this council and the international community toward that goal."
