Unrest rekindles in Tunisia?

TUNIS, Tunisia, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- Political tensions in Tunisia resurfaced after a protester died during a clash with state security forces, authorities said.

An unidentified man was killed during confrontations with government forces in the southern city of Kebili, al-Jazeera reports. Police said the man was hit with a tear-gas canister during demonstrations in front of the offices of a regional governor.

Anti-government protesters are demanding officials tied to the former government of Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali stand down. Ben Ali was ousted last month following weeks of anti-government protests sparked by a self-immolation in December.

The interim Tunisian government that grew out of a revolution that ended the reign of Ben Ali won praise from the international community for commitments to democracy and international human rights.

The European Parliament said Thursday it was sending a 12-member team to Tunisia to examine the political situation with interim government officials in the wake of the revolution.

Al-Jazeera adds that many Tunisian demonstrators are blaming members of the former government for violence and looting across the country.
