Tehran hails Jundallah designation

TEHRAN, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- A decision by Washington to list Sunni militant group Jundallah as a terrorist group is a welcome measure, the Iranian government announced.

The U.S. State Department announced Wednesday that it was formally including Jundallah on its list of foreign terror organizations.

Iran has accused Washington of backing the militant group, which has targeted Iranian state interests from the south of the country. Washington denies the allegations.

Ramin Mehmanparast, the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, said Tehran considered the fight against terrorism a global responsibility.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran considers putting the name of (Abdolmalek) Rigi's terrorist group on the U.S. national list of terror organizations as a move in the right direction," he was quoted by Iran's state-funded broadcaster Press TV as saying.

Tehran paraded captured Jundallah ringleader Rigi before television cameras following his arrest in February. The Iranian government said he confessed to receiving backing from U.S. authorities operating in neighboring Afghanistan. He was executed in June.

The spokesman added that Tehran was assessment Washington's change on tone on regional Sunni and Kurdish terrorist groups.

"Fighting terrorism is a general responsibility of all nations," he added.
