TEHRAN, June 1 (UPI) -- Opposition marches to mark the anniversary of June 12 elections in Iran will stretch from Isfahan to Tehran, leaders said in their formal application.

Opposition leaders Mir Hossein Mousavi and Medhi Karroubi filed their formal application to the Iranian Interior Ministry to have demonstrations June 12.

A letter to the governor of Tehran that accompanied the request states that June 12 marches would start at the Imam Hussein Square in Isfahan and end at Azadi Square in central Tehran, reports Radio Zamaneh, a Persian news service in the Netherlands.

Mousavi and Karroubi led a challenge against Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2009 elections. Supporters of the opposition Green Movement in Iran complain Ahmadinejad stole the election, leading to political violence in Iran not seen since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Iranian security force have responded to opposition groups across Iran as anniversary date approaches. Security is tight, meanwhile, in preparation for Friday celebrations meant to commemorate the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic republic.

Police authorities in Tehran told the Iranian Labor News Agency that any illegal demonstrations would be confronted.
