ANKARA, Turkey, May 26 (UPI) -- The media is to blame for the election of the new leadership of the opposition Republican People's Party, the Turkish prime minister told his supporters.
The Republican People's Party, or CHP, selected Kemal Kilicdaroglu as its new leader during a weekend vote.
Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan told lawmakers in his ruling Justice and Development Party, or AKP, that the media was responsible for the new leadership, Turkish daily newspaper Hurriyet reports.
Erdogan said Kilicdaroglu was offering empty promises to the people, adding the media was at fault for its devotion to the opposition movement.
"These new media types have worked intensely and they continue to work hard," he said. "But the people have sovereignty, not the media."
Kilicdaroglu accused high-ranking members of the AKP party of corruption. He singled out Erdogan for lacking transparency.
