CAIRO, March 23 (UPI) -- The Libyan government extended a second invitation to Beirut to attend the summit for the Arab League scheduled for next weekend in Tripoli.
Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi sent Libyan Deputy Foreign Minister Amran Abu Kara'a to Cairo to send another invitation to Lebanese officials to attend the Arab League summit, London's pan-Arab Asharq al-Awsat reports Tuesday.
Arab League Secretary-General Amr Musa told the news agency that he met with Lebanese leaders as they received the second invitation.
"Therefore the protocol aspect of this has been resolved and the invitation has been sent and received, and we wait, God willing, for Lebanese participation at the summit in view of the importance of every state participating, especially at this critical stage," he said.
Arab leaders are expected to press for progress on the Middle East peace process during the weekend summit. Some Lebanese lawmakers have called on the Arab League to support their effort to force Israel to ease up on its defensive posture as well.
Libyan leaders told Asharq al-Awsat that Gadhafi had no issues with Lebanon.
Lebanon said it would boycott the summit because it blames Tripoli for the 1978 disappearance of Shiite cleric Musa Sadr. Libya says he disappeared after he left the country for Italy.
