Mossad 'audacity' irks Dubai police

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, March 11 (UPI) -- Police officials in Dubai criticized the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad for having the "audacity" to carry out an assassination on their soil.

Dahi Khalfan, the chief of police in Dubai, lashed out against Mossad chief Meir Dagan for conducting operations in his emirate, the Emirati newspaper al-Khaleej reports.

"His audacity was unprecedented when he made his operatives use European passports," he said.

Israel hasn't issued a formal comment on the allegations.

Dubai police are upset after uncovering dozens of foreign passports in the country in connection with a plot allegedly launched by the Israelis to kill a Hamas leader.

Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, a Palestinian national who founded the militant wing of Hamas, was discovered dead in a Dubai hotel in January.

Interpol said the plot to kill Mabhouh was carried out by two teams of more than 12 members each. The first team "consisted of a smaller core group alleged to have carried out the killing," while those in the second team "aided and abetted the first team" by trailing Mabhouh when he arrived Jan.19 in Dubai.

Interpol said it was joining an international task force in Dubai to continue the investigation into the Mabhouh assassination.

Khalfan added that all foreign spies needed to get out of the area.

"They (foreign spies) better leave or they will face extreme measures," he warned.
