Iraqi shoe-thrower meets his match

PARIS, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- An Iraqi journalist in Paris threw a shoe at the journalist who did the same to U.S. President George W. Bush one year earlier in Baghdad.

In December 2008, Muntadar al-Zaidi, a journalist with al-Baghdadia television station, threw two shoes at the visiting American president, saying it was a "farewell kiss" to the American "dog."

An Iraqi journalist at a Paris news conference Tuesday accused Zaidi of working with dictators, shouting "here's another for you" in Arabic. A scuffle ensued, though neither was injured, al-Arabiya reports.

The journalist, Seif al-Khayat, told the Voices of Iraq news agency that he felt dishonored by Zaidi's actions.

Zaidi responded by saying he used this method "against the occupation. I did not use it against a compatriot."

Zaidi was imprisoned by Iraqi authorities for offending a visiting head of state. During a news conference following his release from prison in September, he made various allegations that he was tortured in prison, accusing Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki of "hiding the truth" about his claims.
