Israel warns of border crisis with Lebanon

TEL AVIV, Israel, July 29 (UPI) -- Border tensions between Israel and Lebanon quieted during recent days, though a top Israeli commander warned his troops may be put to the test.

Tensions between Lebanon and Israel have intensified in recent weeks as Beirut filed a series of complaints to the United Nations regarding Israeli incursions into Lebanese territory.

Israel, for its part, contends Hezbollah is stocking weapons along the border in anticipation of renewed conflict.

Gabi Ashkenazi, the chief of the general staff of the Israeli military, said the situation along the border had calmed in recent days, Israeli newspaper Haaretz reports.

"We are following the situation on the northern border," he said. "In general, quiet prevails there and I am not aware of the existence of the winds of war in the region."

Lebanese and Israeli military forces have deployed in the border regions near Shebaa Farms in southern Lebanon recently, with the Lebanese military raising the alert level for its troops.

Ashkenazi, for his part, added that while border tensions have eased somewhat, the situation had the potential to escalate.

"The possibility that we will need to act soon is high, so get the most out of your training," he told new recruits.
