24th Air Force commander named

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo., June 5 (UPI) -- U.S. Air Force officials announced the appointment of a commander for the department's new cyber operations.

The 24th Air Force will be headed by the current assistant deputy chief for air, space and information operations, plans and requirements, Maj. Gen. Richard Webber.

Defense Department officials announced the establishment of the 24th Air Force as part of an effort to address the growing threat from cyberspace. The new Numbered Air Force will provide training for sustained cyber missions integrated with air and space operations.

According to a news release Webber will be responsible to the secretary of the Air Force and the chief of staff for "formulating policy supporting air, space, nuclear, counter-proliferation, homeland security, weather and cyber operations."
