Iran touts defense capabilities

TEHRAN, May 27 (UPI) -- Iran inaugurated a production line for the development of its Younes 6 military hovercraft as Tehran boosts its defense capabilities.

Iranian Defense Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar boasted of the capabilities of the naval craft, noting its inauguration came on the 27th anniversary of the liberation of the port city of Khorramshahr from Iraqi forces, the Tehran Times reports.

"The six-seater Younes 6 hovercraft enjoys a very high capability in military exercises and rapid operations and can perform relief and rescue, patrolling, back-up and logistic missions in seas, rivers and swampy and snowy areas," he said.

He noted the naval industry in Iran can produce 20 of the hovercrafts each year.

The announcement coincides with the Iranian military production of some 20 different military devices, from laser systems to anti-electronic warfare programs.

Iran also began production of its 40mm anti-cruise cannon dubbed Fath, which is capable of reaching targets as far as 7 miles away with a firing rate of 300 rounds per minute.

Iran last week also launched its Sejjil-2 surface-to-surface solid-fuel missile with a range capable of reaching Israel.
