INCB elects new president

VIENNA, May 14 (UPI) -- The Vienna-based U.N. International Narcotics Control Board has named a new president following recent elections.

The INCB, responsible for monitoring compliance with international drug-control treaties and ensuring the prevention of illicit trafficking, has elected Turkish biochemistry and forensic science professor Sevil Atasoy as its president, the United Nations reported.

Atasoy replaces Hamid Ghodse, an Iranian physician and professor, as the head of the INCB and becomes the first female president in almost 20 years.

According to a news release, Atasoy is the "founding editor of the Turkish Journal of Legal Medicine and author of more than 100 scientific papers on drug-related issues."

The term for the INCB president is one year.
