MOGADISHU, Somalia, May 14 (UPI) -- Escalating civilian casualties in Somalia have raised new concerns from the International Committee of the Red Cross about possible abuse of international laws.
Pascal Mauchle, head of the ICRC delegation in Somalia, said Thursday that hospitals in the country's capital, Mogadishu, are seeing a growing number of civilian casualties, the ICRC reported.
A surge in rebel fighting in the country in recent days has raised new concerns about the safety of the civilian population. Mauchle said most of the more than 400 wounded have been civilians, with dozens of people killed after being trapped in the ongoing violence.
"The people of Somalia have once again been subjected to unbearable violence," Mauchle said in a statement.
"The daily struggle for survival is exhausting their capacity to cope. After almost two decades of armed conflict they yearn desperately for security and a stable environment."
