Torture-prevention conference held

PODGORICA, Montenegro, April 22 (UPI) -- The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe began a conference Wednesday in Montenegro on methods for implementing torture-prevention protocols.

The conference, which began Wednesday in Montenegro's capital Podgorica, is designed to help government authorities in the Southeast European region implement the U.N. Convention against Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment protocol, the OSCE reported.

Officials said the two-day conference has brought together torture-prevention experts from international and non-governmental organizations.

According to a news release, the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights and the Montenegro government organized the event to "provide a forum for exchange of good practices and experience in implementing the optional protocol, both regionally and internationally."
