ANKARA, Turkey, April 21 (UPI) -- Lebanese President Michel Suleiman arrived in Ankara on Tuesday to discuss regional security issues in the wake of a visit from the U.S. president.
Suleiman arrived Tuesday, marking the first visit to Turkey by a Lebanese head of state in more than 50 years.
"We reviewed the new (U.S.) policies towards the region in light of President (Barack) Obama's recent visit to Turkey," Suleiman told reporters.
Obama made his first visit to an Arab nation with a stopover in Ankara earlier this month, praising Turkish regional efforts.
Obama told lawmakers in Ankara he would support a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a matter the Turkish and Lebanese leaders backed Tuesday, the Turkish daily Hurriyet noted.
Suleiman led a delegation from Beirut to meet with Turkish President Abdullah Gul. Both leaders signed a memorandum of understanding on bilateral military issues.
Gul, for his part, noted Turkish support for all matters of Lebanese development remains part of Ankara's regional efforts, the Journal of Turkish Weekly reports.
"Our humanitarian assistance (to Lebanon) increased especially in education and health sectors," Gul said.
