Italian police investigate terrorism links

ROME, April 3 (UPI) -- Italian police conducted a multi-city raid Thursday investigating 26 foreigners for suspected ties to terrorism as part of an ongoing country-wide probe.

The 26 individuals are mostly from Algeria and are allegedly linked to terrorist organizations and illegal immigration activities, Adnkronos reported.

Venice Prosecutor Vittorio Borraccetti said the raids took place in Venice and Florence along with seven other cities. While no arrests were made, the raids are part of a larger anti-terrorism investigation that began in March 2007.

The anti-terrorism investigation started after police suspected the Via Dei Mille mosque in Vicenza was being led by an Islamic fundamentalist suspected of having ties to terrorist organizations, Adnkronos reported.
