Congo needs international commitment

KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of Congo, April 3 (UPI) -- U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is calling on the international community to continue efforts to bring stability to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Ban says some progress on security has been made in the Congo including a peace accord reached between the rebel National Congress for People's Defense and the Congo government.

Additionally there have been signs of success stemming from the voluntary disarmament, demobilization, repatriation, reintegration and rehabilitation program, the United Nations reported.

Despite positive gains, Ban says the Congo needs more support and a commitment from the international community to remain engaged to end the ongoing violence in the country.

"The situation remains fluid and volatile, and sustained engagement will be required to ensure that emerging gains are consolidated," Ban said in a statement.
