SKOPJE, Macedonia, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe is backing a new book that guides local authorities on meeting international detention laws.
The book, titled "Handbook on Imposing Detention," was written by the Macedonian Association of Judges and was supported by the Office of Overseas Prosecutorial Development, Assistance and Training at the U.S. Justice Department.
The OSCE announced its support for the book and Friday presented copies to authorities in Macedonia as part of a project to guide developing judicial agencies in aligning policies and practices with international laws on human rights.
Officials say the book was written to support proper detention procedures for suspects, the OSCE reported.
"The handbook provides practical guidelines for judges, prosecutors and attorneys engaged in detention cases," Dragan Tumanovski, Macedonian Association of Judges president, said in a statement.
"It will contribute to harmonizing court practice in weighing detention against other measures that also ensure the presence of the accused and the successful conduct of the legal procedure."
