VIENNA, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- The head of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe called for modesty Thursday from government leaders to ensure long-term European security.
Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis, OSCE chairperson-in-office, laid out a set of principles Thursday in an effort to guide the development of the new European security architecture, the OSCE reported.
Bakoyannis, speaking at an OSCE Parliamentary Assembly meeting in Vienna, called for modesty, consolidation and time for discussion as OSCE leaders deliberate and craft plans for security in Europe. She said that the development of the 1975 Helsinki Final Act took 2,400 meetings and that leaders should avoid haste.
"We have come a long way since the Cold War," Bakoyannis said in a statement.
"But the job is not done. Some participating states feel that we have not yet overcome all dividing lines in Europe. So let us take every invitation to dialogue seriously."
