BRUSSELS , Feb. 18 (UPI) -- The head of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's terrorism unit said Wednesday that diplomatic efforts are key to countering extremism.
Raphael Perl, OSCE Action against Terrorism Unit chief, addressed the East-West Institute's Worldwide Security Conference Wednesday and said that diplomacy and strengthening international cooperation are critical to countering global terrorism, the OSCE reported.
Perl called on the international community to strengthen diplomatic ties as a strategic policy initiative to combat terrorist threats.
"Enhanced diplomacy is a fundamental requisite for coordinated intelligence and coordinated action against terrorism and the factors conducive to terrorism," Perl said in a statement.
"It is imperative to forge durable relationships, both bilaterally and multilaterally, to reinforce mutual trust and commitment, and to overcome any political or cultural difference hindering cooperation."
