PMOI files destined for courts, Iraq says

TEHRAN, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- Files of members of an Iranian dissident group living in the Iraqi province of Diyala will be submitted to national courts, the Iraqi security adviser said.

Iraqi national security adviser Mowaffak al-Rubaie said in an interview with Iran's official Islamic Republic News Agency that the government would close its files on the People's Mujahedin of Iran by submitting their files to national courts.

"The crimes and sins the group has committed are evident and well documented," he said. "Several thousand Iraqi citizens have fallen victims to the terrorist organization, and we have provable evidence that we will submit ... to Iraqi courts."

The PMOI is listed by several governments as a terrorist organization for its violent opposition to the cleric regime in Iran. Its fighters were used in Iraq by Saddam Hussein to help quell Shiite rebellions in the south in 1991 as well.

The European Union in January, however, accepted an official list of terrorist organizations that did not include the PMOI, following months of lobbying by the group.

Rubaie said his government had consulted with European leaders to help address the issue Iraq faces with the PMOI.

Rubaie said in December the PMOI needed to relocate to another country following the expiration of the U.N. mandate for Iraq.

"Staying in Iraq is not an option for them," an Iraqi government statement said then.
