Air Force provisional command goes active

WASHINGTON, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- The U.S. Air Force's provisional new nuclear operations command unit Global Strike Command was activated Monday by top officials.

The provisional Global Strike Command, headed by Brig. Gen. James Kowalski, will be temporarily located at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington.

Kowalski, who was named the provisional commander in December, will lead a team supported by the Air Combat Command and Air Force Space Command in organizing the new Air Force command and implementing the program action directive, which includes making a decision on a permanent location, the Air Force reported.

Officials say the provisional Global Strike Command will be expected to lead efforts preparing for the eventual stand-up of a permanent command that is being established to consolidate the Air Force's nuclear operations.

"There is an incredibly rich tradition of operational competency in this mission, and our Air Force has done a lot of work to restore our focus on deterrence," Kowalski said in a statement.

"We look forward to laying the foundation needed to stand up Global Strike Command."
