WASHINGTON, Nov. 13 (UPI) -- The first ever recipient of the U.S. director of national intelligence's new Intelligence Community Medal for Valor award has been named.

Director of National Intelligence Mike McConnell announced that Marine Lance Cpl. James Swain will become the first recipient of the Intelligence Community Medal for Valor. The new award was established in October to recognize individuals in the intelligence community who have made a courageous contribution to U.S. national security.

McConnell cited Swain's bravery during the battle of Fallujah, Iraq, in 2004. Officials say Swain, who was serving as a Marine Corps intelligence analyst, was helping secure an operation by Company K, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regimental Combat Team, 1st Marine Division. During the operation Swain identified the threat of an approaching insurgent ambush and opened fire on the militants.

Swain, who was fatally wounded in the incident, is credited with saving the lives of his Marine Corps unit. Brig. Gen. R.M. Lake, Marine Corps director of intelligence, wrote of Swain that his "heroism and courage in supporting the Intelligence Community's mission and our nation's security typify the core values we all strive to meet on a daily basis."

Officials say the award will be presented to Swain's family during a ceremony on Friday.
