Rebel attacks called terrorism

KINSHASA, Democratic Republic of Congo, June 6 (UPI) -- A recent rebel attack on a refugee camp in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has prompted calls from the United Nations for an increase in security.

The United Nations says the violence on a camp for displaced persons in the eastern DR Congo by armed Rwandan Hutu rebels calling themselves the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda was an act of terrorism. Officials say that at least six people were killed in the incident and as many as 20 others were injured, the United Nations reported.

The violence has resulted in the announced plans to evacuate U.N. staff and temporarily suspend operations in the Rutshuru area of North Kivu province in DR Congo.

U.N. Secretary-General Special Representative to the DR Congo Alan Doss and authorities from the United States and the European Union released a statement calling the attacks on civilians an act of terrorism.

Doss says those responsible must be brought to justice.
