TEL AVIV, Israel, June 2 (UPI) -- Tzipi Livni, Israeli minister of foreign affairs, met with her German counterpart, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, to discuss recent political developments in Lebanon.
Steinmeier met with Livni Monday in Tel Aviv, Israel, following a visit to Lebanon. Officials say Steinmeier and Livni discussed Lebanon's recent political developments along with concerns over Hezbollah and illicit arms smuggling between Syria and Lebanon, the Israel Ministry of Foreign affairs reported.
Livni pressed Steinmeier over implementing the U.N. Security Council resolution to release kidnapped Israeli soldiers and disarming Hezbollah. Livni also called for an end to arms smuggling across the Syrian-Lebanese border.
Additionally, Livni addressed concerns about opening a dialogue in Iran to discuss ending the country's much criticized nuclear program.
"The desire of elements within the international community to open a dialogue with Iran cannot come at the expense of the unequivocal demand to halt the enrichment of uranium by Iran as a precondition for any dialogue," Livni said in a statement.
